All About Water VII, and I'm IN!
Today, I went visiting the artists studios at Erector Square, as part of New Haven City-Wide Open Studios. It's always fun to visit friends in their working spaces, see their newer works, and meet new people and their works... Overall, this whole Open Studios event, it's a very enriching experience that I wouldn't want to miss.
For those of you who are not familiar with Erector Square, it used to be a toy factory that was converted into artists studios and commercial spaces. It has about eight buildings, all connected through hallways and stairways all over the place. Kind of like a maze, but they're good with the signage so one doesn't get lost in it!!
Among the friends I visited today are: encaustic artists Binnie Birstein, and Maria Lara (whom I always wanted to meet and as it turned out, we already new each other!!! Can you believe it? LOL!); printmakers Barbara Harder, and Irene Miller; paper artists Jennifer Davies, and Karen Wheeler; Rashmi Talpade who does intricate collages, drawings, installations... and last but not least, my friend, ceramic artist Linda Giannelli, who makes the most beautiful small sculptures depicting mainly animals; just to name a few...
So, you can only imagine what is like to be there, at Erector Square. There's so much art to see, I felt like I was running like my son's hamster through all these hallways and stairways. All of the sudden, my phone rings... It was someone from Gallery One in Old Saybrook anouncing that the 2 artworks I had submitted for their upcoming show where IN!! I was so happy with the news... but wait a minute, the opening is tomorrow afternoon and I need to invite my friends and family to come!!!! They really made me run today!!!
I'm finally home, thanks to the Social Media, I was able to invite as many people as I could through Facebook, posted the event on my Facebook Page (by the way, if you go to my page don't forget to press the LIKE buttom!!), sent invitations through Twitter and text messages... So hopefully I'm covered, and I might get some of my friends to stop by the opening tomorrow. I don't know what I would have done without technology today!!!

The Affordable Art Fair-Fall Edition 2011
Despite the long days, the traffic to get there (police had many streets closed due to the United Nations meeting), and the never ending pouring rain on Friday that left our hallways pretty empty (only the more adventurous dare to come, thank you!!!)... my first participation in the Affordable Art Fair was a success. I really enjoyed meeting new people, made interesting connections and to top it off, 6 of my artworks were sold!!!

These were my latest artworks finished right before the Art Fair. They reflect my new direction, so I'm very pleased they were the first to get sold. I also sold...
I guess people were looking for 12" x 12" format paintings!!!! LOL!

Open Doors of Milford, 2011 - Charity Auction
I'm currently participating in the Downtown Milford 4th Annual Open Doors and Windows Art Exhibit and charity auction. This exhibition is presented by the Downtown Milford Business Association, and this is their biggest year yet with 37 Artists represented, using recycled doors and windows.
The opening happened last month during Oyster Eve, a traditional summer festival in the town of Milford, CT. During all this time, the doors/windows have been showcased across downtown Milford, thanks to the sponsorship of the local stores, restaurants and businesses, that hosted the artists' creations.
Here's a close-up of the door I created using materials found during the deconstruction of my home and recycled into a new life, enjoy it!

I was thrilled to create a door for this especial exhibition because it will be auctioned off, and proceeds will go to the Domestic Violence Services of Greater New Haven. The mission of Domestic Violence Services is to create an environment that supports individual safety and breaks the cycle of domestic violence.

ABOUT MY DOOR: Living in a construction site for over 20 months already, while remodeling our home, taught me how many times we ought to struggle through the discomforts of a “deconstruction” in order to “reconstruct”. This can be applied to a broader spectrum. Not only to the physical state of remodeling a building to make it better and fulfill our needs, but also to a more personal level, as a mean to better our lives. When we find ourselves in struggling situations that are hard to break from it’s always better to take the chance and “deconstruct” what we are familiar with to “reconstruct” a better life for us and for our love ones… regardless of the uncertainties ahead.
The doors and windows creations are gorgeous this year, so don't miss your chance to come back home with an unique piece of artwork, with the added bonus of having helped a great cause!
