Two-Day Workshops at the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill in Truro (Cape Cod), Massachusetts
June 8 & 9, Thursday & Friday, 10am - 4pm
One of the versatilities of working with encaustic is its use for sculpture. One of those uses is inherent to its ability to give structure to soft materials. It can also be used to add strength, and to seal and finish surfaces, among others uses that will be talked about in class. In this workshop, students will be using wire and plaster gauze to sculpt pieces. They will be also using papers and fibers dipped in wax to create sculptural pieces, by folding, twisting, sewing, and attaching pieces together to build a structure that can be mounted or installed as well.

The plaster pieces will be prepared on day one and left to dry. Day two will be spent finishing up their sculptures, and learning different ways to display them, as well as how to attach them to a panel or support. They will be painting their prep pieces; experiencing the different ways that encaustic can enhance its surfaces. Students will be encouraged to use mixed media elements, combined with other media to develop their concepts and push their limits and possibilities. We will wrap up the workshop with a discussion and critique. By developing an awareness of the sculptural possibilities of the Encaustic medium, this workshop is designed to increase the ability to create, see and respond to a 3-D object, despite your personal style.

A materials list will be provided upon registration.

*Relief and Textural Effects with Mixed Media in Encaustic
Two-Day hands-on Intensive
TBD
Weekend workshop with artist Corina S. Alvarezdelugo

10am - 4pm each day

Learn how to incorporate clay, joint compound and plaster cloth to add depth, texture, and relief to Encaustic painting in this two-day workshop.

DAY ONE: starts with a talk and demonstration of various techniques followed by a hands-on session in which to apply these techniques. Using terracotta (earthenware) clay, and joint compound to lay down a ground on a porous (unsized) paper surface. You will use this ground to create relief on which to design various textures, marks and strokes. You will also create 3-D shapes that will be attached on to your panels on the following day. It will all be left to dry overnight.

DAY TWO: You'll start by attaching the 3-D shapes on to your panels while the wax heats up, and continue by painting your prep substrates, experiencing the different ways that wax can enhance its surface. You will be encouraged to use mixed media elements and materials to develop your concept and push your limits and possibilities. The use of Encaustic media will add to the multi layered and textural aspect of this work.

We will wrap up the workshop with a round table discussion and critique. By developing an awareness of the possible textures and layers that can be incorporated to the use of Encaustic medium, this workshop is designed to increase the ability to create, see and respond to a textural surface that can be incorporated into your works, despite your personal style.

This workshop is open to students with an intermediate to advanced level of encaustic experience.

 *Encaustic and cork I
Using Cork as substrate. Introducing a New Material to work with Encaustic: Cork! The beautiful coastal region of the Costa Brava, Spain, is famous for their role in manufacturing corks, so I have created a series of workshops to take advantage of the availability of cork (bark tissue) in the area, and combine it with the ancient medium of Encaustic, while immersing ourselves into the life and culture of this Spanish region. Students will create paintings using a thin layer of cork as their substrate, glued to a panel.

*Encaustic and cork II
Using Cork as substrate and as material. Students will use thin layers of cork glued to a support panel to create layers and design interesting reliefs as a point of departure for their encaustic paintings.

*Encaustic and cork III
Cork as material. Students will build structures utilizing different shapes/depth cork pieces, cutting, screwing pieces together, using wire, twine… combined with encaustic to create 3-D sculptures. They’ll be able to make relief pieces to hang on the wall, and/or sculptures that can stand-alone.
