Wax and Sculpture since earlier times!

Ever since I discovered Encaustic I got hooked, and have been using this “new” medium every time I can, even in my sculpture work.

I say “new” because it’s “new to me”, but it’s really an old media that is making a strong comeback.

It was actually the Greeks three thousand years ago who started it all, when their shipbuilders decided to mix beeswax with Damar resin to caulk and waterproof hulls. In fact, Encaustic, comes from the Greek word Enkaustikos, that means, “to burn in”. As Greeks found that by heating beeswax and adding Damar resin to it, the mixture would raise the wax melting point and hardness. It was then, only a matter of time for people to start adding pigments to the mix and create a painting medium with great luminosity and depth, which has been used as far back as the Greco-Roman Egypt era.

NOTE: Evidence of this ancient medium can be found in museums all over the world. If you're ever in New York City, visit the Metropolitan Museum and take a look at the Fayum Mommy Portraits from the Greco-Roman Egypt era in their collection. It’s amazing to see how wax has preserved the vivid colors of the pigments for so many years.

Consequently, “…the curved hulls of seagoing barques led Greek artists to take encaustic in two directions: flat for easel painting and fully dimensional for the polychroming of clay and marble sculptures… [Evidence of earlier sculptors using wax can be found in] a krater [large vase used in ancient Greece to mix wine and water] from the fourth century B.C., now in the Metropolitan museum of Art, [that] depicts a sculptor applying wax to a marble figure,” Joanne Mattera, The Art of Encaustic Painting: Contemporary Expression in the Ancient Medium of Pigmented Wax, Watson-Guptill Publications (2001).

Recently, during a trip to Madrid, Spain, I got the chance to visit the modern, contemporary Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. It was such a treat!

Amongst all the wonderful art I got to see, experience, and enjoy, I came across a couple of wax sculptures that inspired me to write this post, they were both made by Post-Impressionist Italian sculptor, Medardo Rosso (Turin 1858-Milan 1928), and the best thing is that they allowed me photograph them.

Both sculptures were made using Wax on "Escayola," (which is a very high quality plaster use for construction in Spain). Here are the images, enjoy!

In my opinion, here the wax brings to the pieces a sense of exquisite delicacy!

As we can see, wax and sculpture have had successful marriages all throughout history, as a coating for marble, clay, plaster, wood, fabric, and other porous surfaces, as well as in the "Lost-Wax" technique used to cast metal sculptures.

Of course, my work could never compared to Rosso's works, but since I'm sure you're curious to see what I have done with this "new" found medium, here are some of my sculptures where I have used Encaustic.

I have a stoneware and wax sculpture I recently finished, but don't have a good picture of it yet, so I'll try to post it tomorrow after I photograph it under good lighting... and since I can get enough of this medium, I'm currently working on a "book art" sculpture, using paper and wax. I'll post pictures on another post when I'm done!!

Learning about Solarplate printing

Amongst the art workshops I took last year, Solarplate was one of them. For this, I traveled last March to New York City to take this workshop with the internationally recognized painter and printmaker, Julio Valdez.

You may be asking yourselves what is Solarplate? It is a revolutionary and versatile method of printmaking created by master printmaker, Dan Welden in 1972, to create an etching or photo-etching plate using solar energy, developing the image with water. Solarplate is a non-acid, non-toxic method that produces extraordinary results.

This technique claimed to be a wonderful process for painters, mixed-media, and photo-based artists to create fine art limited edition prints and installations. So I had to give it a try!!!

For this workshop I had to prepare in advance the images I wanted to experiment with in the class. I had to create positive images (5 X 7 inches each), either hand-drawn or photo based, on a translucent or transparent material, such as clear/frosted Mylar or acetate.

NOTE: I just realized I think I took the hand-drawing thing a little bit too literal!! hahaha!!!

For the hand-drawn images I had to use opaque materials, like pencils, inks, gouache, acrylics, oils, litho crayons, etc. For my drawings I chose to work with pencils and ink.

Some people in the class, brought printed photographs on prepared "clear" mylar/acetate, and then reworked the images by hand, like you would with the hand-drawn pieces. Since the quality of the positive image created is going to determine the quality of the plate and therefor the prints, they had to make sure to get their photographs printed at a good printing place, like Kinkos or any professional lab. It was also recommended to try the same image printed in two variations of contrast/tones.

After the plate had been exposed to the light,
we brushed the emulsion off with water, to get the image
imprinted on the plate...


...but we need to expose it to the sun light, once again, so the emulsion hardens.

We also did a reverse method to etch the plate (Embossing). By inking the plate, before exposing it to the light, my daughter (who took the weekend workshop with me) and I did a collaborative plate...

We made a few more plates and prints, from the different drawings we brought during that wonderful weekend for both, my daughter and I. Back into my studio, I have been using some of my prints for my mixed media artworks, and here's one of them...

Happy New Year 2012 and Overview of 2011

Happy New Year to all my readers!

As it is already customary for me to write in January an overview of the year that has just ended, here it’s my 2011 overview. Enjoy!

Last year, the weather was a little crazy around here; we were hit hard with unprecedented amounts of snow, cool temperatures, ice and slush everywhere, roofs collapsed... it was total chaos, since we are not use to having such a harsh winter.

So I took this time to read more (added a few more books to my art library), expanding my knowledge in Social Media, and ...remember the donation I've been working on since last year? Well, I decided to create a non-for-profit blog and Facebook page to raise Awareness on Dense Breast Tissue and the current screening methods that cannot detect cancer well on this type of tissue. My dream is to make this a blog for all women to share their stories, so the world realizes that we are many affected with the issue and that we all deserve to be screened early if we have cancer cells growing on our breasts. I was very excited when Dr. Nancy Cappella, from Are you Dense, Inc, kindly wrote her story to share it on the Awareness blog. But we need more!! Please, visit the Awareness Blog, read about this issue, learn about it and be proactive!

Then, in September, we were under the eye of hurricane “Irene”, which was very stressful. Thank goodness it changed into a tropical storm when it reached our coastline. However, our state had extensive damage all around, and some people had no power for about a week or so, with no water, no stove... God willing, we won't get another one like it for many years to come!!

We finished the year, weather wise, with an early snowstorm in late October. Can you believe it? There were still leaves on the trees, which complicated things a bit, many trees fell down on homes, electrical wires, roads… hence most of the state lost power once again, and unfortunately many people were without power for over a week.

We ended the year with a warmer winter. Let’s see what this year will bring. I hope the weather behaves better this time around!

As you may know, I'm always looking for ways to expand my creative possibilities. So, since construction of my new Studio/Gallery continue through most of last year, and my old studio was too cramped to work on, I took the opportunity to take some new art classes, to learn new approaches and techniques that I could later apply to my works and pass along to my students.

In this note, here are the workshops I took during 2011:

During March, I travel to New York City to take a SOLARPLATE WORKSHOP with the internationally recognized painter and printmaker, Julio Valdez, which I enjoyed greatly. Not only because of all the new knowledge learned, but it was also the perfect mother/daughter weekend. You see, my college daughter joined me in the class, so it was fun to make art with her and get to bond with her.

Last April, and thanks to the donations that many of you, my readers, made here on my blog, I was able to travel to Dallas, Texas to take Michelle Belto's workshop: FROM PULP TO PAINTING: EXPLORATIONS IN PAPER AND WAX, at the Encaustic Center. It was one of the most enriching experience I’ve ever had, besides being the first time in my life that I would get on a plane by myself and go to an unknown place, and meet people I’ve never seeing before. Awesome!

In June, I was so fortunate to be one of the participants to the 5th International Encautic Conference at Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA. Those were three full days of lectures and demonstrations on everything to do with this wonderful media of Encaustic and the business of art. Got the chance to meet artists from all over the world and learned so much from them, and the place, PTown is so beautiful, it was so worth the drive!!

While there, I had the opportunity to take some wonderful workshops at the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill; CASTING WITH WAX with the multi-talented Kim Bernard, and a very different workshop, VISUAL JOURNALING, a workshop that focuses on the visual expression instead of a written language diary, with Nancy Azara.

During the summer time, I joined Binnie Birstein’s encaustic class at the Creative Arts Workshop to better my skills in the media.

I participated in fewer exhibitions than usual last year, for the same reason that I didn’t have a space to work. Nonetheless, here’s the list of the few I entered:

The year began with my participation in [UN+ART]-4; a salon style art exhibition at the Hartford's ArtSpace Gallery, which benefited the South Park Inn homeless Center.

February started with my participation in the Annual Members Exhibition of the Madison Art Society, and was invited to partake in The First Mixed Media Exhibition at the new Six Summit Gallery, in Ivoryton, CT, where I sold one of the mixed media paintings I brought in. I sold another painting in March at Expressiones Cultural Center in New London, CT

During April, I was invited to take part in Time In, a collaborative project involving Expressiones Cultural Center, Mitchell College, and the Judy Dworin Performance Project (JDPP) at Expressiones Cultural Center, New London, CT. It was such a heartening experience to learn about the penitentiary system in the US and in particular about the York Women Penitentiary in Connecticut. I had to take their experiences, read their poems, songs… and create two artworks inspired from the experience. At the end, I was very happy when the own Judy Dworin wrote to me:

“Wonderful Work! I loved your two pieces in the show at Expressiones. And the woman who wrote the text that you incorporated would be so thrilled to see them! Might you have photos of the two pieces that I might bring to York [women prison in Niantic, CT] to show her and the other women?” 2011 -Judy Dworin, author of TIME IN, reflections of women in Jail.

Also in April, I was invited by Arte, Inc Gallery to curate an exhibition for them. So I invited a group of talented artists with Latin roots from all over Connecticut, and named the exhibition Perspectives/Perspectivas. Because, even though they all have common roots, each one brings their own particular view to their artistic works.

Sponsored by the Downtown Milford Business Association, I was invited again, along with other artists, to create an artwork on a recycled door. In the summer, completed works were displayed at the sponsoring businesses throughout downtown Milford, and in September the transformed "doors and windows" were auctioned off and a percentage of the sales was donated to this year's charity,

Domestic Violence Services of Greater New Haven.

On a different note, my work, “Medallion,” made using Encaustic was featured at the 5th Encaustic International Conference's home page.

I was honored with an invitation to join the 6th Annual In The Pink Art Stroll for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, at Expressiones Cultural Center, New London, CT, where my sculpture, Awareness had center stage on their gallery window. At the same center, but in a different gallery, my sculpture “As One” was juried in to LOVE, Juried by Jeffrey W. Cooley, Director of the Cooley Gallery, in Old Lyme, Connecticut.

At the same time, I participated in The New Haven Paint & Clay Club active members exhibit at the John Slade Ely House, New Haven; and was invited by artists Julio Valdez, who curated a small group of artists (from Washington DC, New York and Connecticut) to showcase our works at The Affordable Art Fair, Fall Edition New York, NY. I’m happy to report that six of my paintings were sold during the fair.

During the month of October, I participated in All About Water VII presented by GalleryOne and the Tracy Art Center at GalleryOne at the Clayhouse, Old Saybrook, CT.

November came with good news, my artwork “Undinde, the Water Nymph” had been accepted in to the Connecticut Women Artists Juried Exhibition. Gallery, Meriden, CT, juried by Melanie Anderson Bourbeau, Curator for Collections at Hill Stead Museum, Farmington CT

The Grand Opening!

Once my new studio was finally finished and I had moved in, I started working and working, days and nights, until the anticipated grand opening of my new studio, the weekend before Thanksgiving. The opening was a great success, good friends and new ones came along, many people showed interested in joining my classes and ten of my artworks were sold, along with prints, my mixed media book, cards… Thank you everyone who stopped by and to those that couldn't come but sent me their good wishes, you all made this grand opening perfect and I'll treasure it in my heart forever!!

FOREVER, piece donated to FOCUS

Also in 2011, I created a especial painting that was donated to FOCUS’ fundraising, a non-profit organization in the town of Farmington, CT to keep school children safe and away from drugs and alcohol.

I continue donating 50% of the sales of the pocket mirrors with the printed image of my sculpture "Awareness", to the Downey Sisters' Fund FOR BRCA MUTATION AWARENESS AND EDUCATION, to educate the public and the medical community about the genetic risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

I was also invited to come to an Elementary school in Westport, CT to talk to a group of 11 year-old children about the art/technique involved in my sculpture work, and we all had a blast! After my talk and demo, the children had to make their own sculptures following my idea of creating “round” sculptures. Their works were showcased and auctioned off during the school's MUSEUM NIGHT. It is all part of a local program call ArtSmart, a parent run, in class program designed to stimulate student appreciation for art. Isn't that great?

Well, one of my New Year’s Resolutions is to be more constant with my writing here. So, I will be making an effort to write at least once a week to keep you all updated with my works, my exhibitions and even tell you more about what I have learn in the arts and my art classes. All About Water VII, and I'm IN!

Today, I went visiting the artists studios at Erector Square, as part of New Haven City-Wide Open Studios. It's always fun to visit friends in their working spaces, see their newer works, and meet new people and their works... Overall, this whole Open Studios event, it's a very enriching experience that I wouldn't want to miss.

For those of you who are not familiar with Erector Square, it used to be a toy factory that was converted into artists studios and commercial spaces. It has about eight buildings, all connected through hallways and stairways all over the place. Kind of like a maze, but they're good with the signage so one doesn't get lost in it!!

Among the friends I visited today are: encaustic artists Binnie Birstein, and Maria Lara (whom I always wanted to meet and as it turned out, we already new each other!!! Can you believe it? LOL!); printmakers Barbara Harder, and Irene Miller; paper artists Jennifer Davies, and Karen Wheeler; Rashmi Talpade who does intricate collages, drawings, installations... and last but not least, my friend, ceramic artist Linda Giannelli, who makes the most beautiful small sculptures depicting mainly animals; just to name a few...

So, you can only imagine what is like to be there, at Erector Square. There's so much art to see, I felt like I was running like my son's hamster through all these hallways and stairways. All of the sudden, my phone rings... It was someone from Gallery One in Old Saybrook anouncing that the 2 artworks I had submitted for their upcoming show where IN!! I was so happy with the news... but wait a minute, the opening is tomorrow afternoon and I need to invite my friends and family to come!!!! They really made me run today!!!

I'm finally home, thanks to the Social Media, I was able to invite as many people as I could through Facebook, posted the event on my Facebook Page (by the way, if you go to my page don't forget to press the LIKE buttom!!), sent invitations through Twitter and text messages... So hopefully I'm covered, and I might get some of my friends to stop by the opening tomorrow. I don't know what I would have done without technology today!!!

The Affordable Art Fair-Fall Edition 2011

Despite the long days, the traffic to get there (police had many streets closed due to the United Nations meeting), and the never ending pouring rain on Friday that left our hallways pretty empty (only the more adventurous dare to come, thank you!!!)... my first participation in the Affordable Art Fair was a success. I really enjoyed meeting new people, made interesting connections and to top it off, 6 of my artworks were sold!!!

Open Doors of Milford, 2011 - Charity Auction

I'm currently participating in the Downtown Milford 4th Annual Open Doors and Windows Art Exhibit and charity auction. This exhibition is presented by the Downtown Milford Business Association, and this is their biggest year yet with 37 Artists represented, using recycled doors and windows.

The opening happened last month during Oyster Eve, a traditional summer festival in the town of Milford, CT. During all this time, the doors/windows have been showcased across downtown Milford, thanks to the sponsorship of the local stores, restaurants and businesses, that hosted the artists' creations.

I was thrilled to create a door for this especial exhibition because it will be auctioned off, and proceeds will go to the Domestic Violence Services of Greater New Haven. The mission of Domestic Violence Services is to create an environment that supports individual safety and breaks the cycle of domestic violence.

Here's a close-up of the door I created using materials found during the deconstruction of my home and recycled into a new life, enjoy it!

ABOUT MY DOOR: Living in a construction site for over 20 months already, while remodeling our home, taught me how many times we ought to struggle through the discomforts of a “deconstruction” in order to “reconstruct”. This can be applied to a broader spectrum. Not only to the physical state of remodeling a building to make it better and fulfill our needs, but also to a more personal level, as a mean to better our lives. When we find ourselves in struggling situations that are hard to break from it’s always better to take the chance and “deconstruct” what we are familiar with to “reconstruct” a better life for us and for our love ones… regardless of the uncertainties ahead.

Arte, Inc invited me to come back and curate another exhibition in their beautiful gallery, as I curated one for them in 2009.

Arte, Inc is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to Promoting Latino Art, Culture & Talent in the state of Connecticut, USA. They establish partnerships with community agencies and groups to improve quality of life of residents. Arte also assists artists, organizes programs, events, shows and exhibits. They develop and run effective youth programming to engage children and mold better citizens, and most importantly it provides education.

I feel Connecticut artists with Latin roots bring different perspectives to their artistic works, so it is with great pleasure that I'm putting together a group of these talented people to show the public their particular views... and here are the artists I have selected to participate: Sikiu Perez, Margarita Rodriguez-Lansberg and MariaCorina Alvarezdelugo will come back to Arte to show you their new works again this year; along with three new artists, Millie Donovan, Fernando Garcia, and Noe Jimenez... they are all very different from each other and I'm sure the public will enjoy their art greatly!!

A little info about our exhibitors...
MariaCorina Alvarezdelugo is currently a senior at Parsons Institute of Design in New York City, where she is pursuing a career in Design and Management. MariaCorina participated in the juried Biennial exhibition titled Cultural Passages: Identity Made Visible, at the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, CT, in 2007 and in Connections/Conexiones exhibition at Arte, INC in 2009, amongst other exhibits.

Mixed media painter, Millie Donovan likes to create texture in her works by combining typography, photography, and found objects with traditional media, such as acrylic and watercolor paints. To learn more about Millie Donovan go to: http://milliedonovan.blogspot.com/

The paintings of Ferando Garcia tend to be colorful and often realistically rendered, influenced by the vibrancy of street art and urban culture. Reflecting a mix between aesthetic experimentation and deeper explorations on personal events that engage the viewer.

Noe Jimenez is a Dominican-American painter. His work has been featured in online publications such as the Dirty Pond and Artist Advocacy. He has exhibited at the Madison Arts Cinema in the two-person show Plompous and has been a regular exhibitor at the New Haven City-Wide shows for the last 3 years. Noé has studied at the Altos de Chavon School of Art in La Romana, Dominican Republic; the University of Urbino in Italy and El Colegio de España, in Salamanca, Spain. This summer he will be joining students from Italy and the United States in a performance piece at the 2011 Venice Biennale.

Sculptor and painter, Sikiu Perez gets inspiration from the Ancient Mesoamerican and Pre-Columbian Art. Her themes are usually the female figure and a wide variety of birds, symbolizing graceful fertility and power. Sikiu has shown her works in art galleries around the USA and in her native Venezuela. Award winning mixed media and watercolor artist, Margarita Rodríguez-Lansberg’s work, has been exhibited in galleries in the USA and Venezuela. Her paintings are included in private collections in both countries.

I don't know if you're familiar with the reality of the artists these days, but our expenses could rise up very quickly if we want to make it in this profession. I'm not talking only about the materials one needs to produce the actual artwork, which I think you might all be aware of. I’m talking about classes to better our techniques or to expand our possibilities; I’m also talking about entry fees to most shows we participate in, specially juried exhibitions, with the added risk that we might not even enter in the exhibition. Transportation to and from exhibiting spaces, shipping costs, marketing strategies, etc. all adds up.

I’ve been lucky enough to be able to support myself so far, with my husband’s help, and the sales of my works. But this year along, besides the entry fees to all the exhibitions I usually try my luck at, and the sculpture studio hours I pay for every trimester, and the construction of my new studio/gallery, which is almost done (woohoo!); I’m taking a weekend workshop in NYC next weekend, and I’ll be participating in the 5^th International Encaustic Conference in Province Town, MA in June. For this conference I’m paying for hotel, meals, transportation and two post conference workshops at the Truro Center for the Arts, to take advantage of the special opportunity. For this reason, when I found out Michelle Belto’s workshop, which I really want to take, is been offered at The Encaustic Center in Texas, I thought I might get a chance to make it if I make an appeal to the generosity of FRIENDS, FAMILY and FOLLOWERS, to help me travel to Dallas, TX to take her workshop. I’m sure this new venture will push even further my creative possibilities.

You may ask. What’s in it for me? Besides helping me make better art for you to enjoy, I will raffle two artworks amongst the donors that donate $20 or more to my cause. One of the artworks was gently donated by the own Michelle Belto to support my appeal, and the other one from yours truly to thank you! I will be making this piece using the newly learned techniques.

There is a workshop, by Michelle Belto, I'm dying to take, unfortunately, when she gives it close to where I live, is at the same time of my son's high school graduation and unfortunately I can't be in two places at once...

Well, they are now offering this workshop at the Encaustic Center in Texas, as well. The workshop is call: From Pulp to Painting: Explorations in Paper and Wax. It's a three-day workshop and the cost is $385, not including airfare tickets (back and forth), accommodations, and meals expenses, and transportation.

This dream of mine will only be possible with your support to get me there and back, and I will be extremely grateful. From Sweet to Bitter: 2 projects, 2 completely different themes, 2 extremes

I'm currently working on two projects at the same time. One about bees and honey; and the other one about how time pass by for women in jail... From sweet to bitter...oh my! Let's see what comes out from this!!!

Project 1: Beeline: it's all about the bee

This summer, I'll be participating in the FIFTH INTERNATIONAL ENCAUSTIC CONFERENCE, for which I'm so excited, and one of the benefits for conferees is to be able to enter our work at a special Juried Exhibition called Beeline. This exhibition will be juried by Francine D’Olimpio, director of Kobalt Gallery in Provincetown, MA, and host it in her gallery. Of course, this doesn't guarantee that my work will get selected, but you know how I love a challenge!!

The guidelines for this exhibition is that one has to incorporate encaustic (or mixed-media encaustic) to paintings, sculptures and works on paper that relate directly or indirectly to the theme of bees, abejas, abeilles.

Some examples they gave us to get us inspired are: colony, hexagon, hive, honey, honeycomb, industriousness, insect, nectar, queen, skep, sting, sweet; the bees in an entomological sense (order: Hymenoptera), and a historical sense (apiarists believe that Egyptians were the first beekeepers); and even the overblown hairdo from the Sixties. So, as you can see there is a lot of information to get our inspiration flowing and my brain had already started the creative process, and tomorrow I'll begin putting it down into a tangible reality.

Project 2: Time In: A Collaboration

On the other hand, I was recently invited to participate in a unique collaborative project involving Expressiones Cultural Center, Mitchell College, and the Judy Dworin Performance Project (JDPP). This project is made possible in part by a grant from the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism.

The staging at Mitchell College of Judy Dworin's compelling work Time In, a signature piece based upon the lives of women imprisoned in the York Correctional Institution in Niantic, Connecticut, that will take place on Sunday, April 17th at the College. Simultaneously, a thematic art exhibition, mounted both at Expressiones and at Mitchell, will explore visual interpretations of the experience and the broader implications of incarceration.

They asked me to create to artworks related to the theme. As I'm sure you all know by know that I can't say "no" to a challenge, I'm already busy, researching on the theme, to come out with two artworks for this exhibition.

Setting up for [UN+ART]4, a salon style exhibition to benefit a Homeless Shelter

Last Sunday afternoon, I brought three of my sculptures to Hartford's ArtSpace Gallery, to set them up for [UN+ART]4. While setting up I met multi-talented artist, Matt Seremet. He has brought one of his portrait drawings, a series of wonderful digital art, and his camera!!! So, after hanging his works Matt started taking pictures and videos to document the whole process of artists setting up their works at the Gallery. Isn't it cool?

Now, I want to share with you the pictures Matt took of me setting up my sculptures at the gallery. Enjoy them!

Undine, the water nympth

I have an oil painting I had started over a year ago while taking a life painting class with the amazing painter, Chris Zhang at the Lyme Art Association. I was working with oils on a 20" x 30" linen canvas I streached myself, and even though I applied Gesso to the surface, I had trouble getting the oil paint into the canvas. It seamed as it was absorbing the paint. To make things worse, I could only work with that model for one class, so I never finished it.

Since I'm constantly experimenting and trying new things, I decided to take this unfinished painting out of the "closet" and worked on the figure in a way I've never done before. I was going to work on the figure, as traditional painters would do, and I will use mixed media to work on the background, to give it a more contemporary feeling.

I started working on the figure using oil pastels.

The problem was that the posture of the model seamed uncomfortable to me. So I came up with the idea of creating a story around her and made her into a water nymph, Undine! (click on Undine to learn more about the German romance that inspired me)

Then, I glued different textured papers into the background, to add some layering effect and dimension. I divided the background into her two worlds: water and earth...

I then did some image transferring to tell her story:

*The image on the top right, is a transfer from a copy of John William Waterhouse's representation of the French Undine, circa 1872. He portrays Undine as she comes out of the water...

*The image in the top center, is from a photograph of my grandparents, the day of their wedding in the 1940's. I added a frame to it, to recreate the era.

*The image on the bottom left is from a vintage postcard I received during a paper swap! There are also images from stamps and letter writings.

Later on, I applied Shellac to Waterhouse's Undine, in order to make the transferred a little bit more translucent. Started adding watercolor and oil crayon to the paper collage in the background, while continuing on my drawing of the main figure.

The grasses on the bottom right were bothering me, so I started adding oil pastels to make them blend more with the background...

I'm almost done with this mixed media painting. I will finish it tomorrow and post the last picture as soon as I can...

Happy New Year to all my readers. I wish you all health, peace, prosperity... and tons of creativity!!!!

Here's my 2010 year in review, enjoy!

In spite of the ongoing construction of Corina's new Studio/Gallery, 2010 was a very productive year for her. She received invitations to show her artworks; her works were juried into several exhibitions, and received more awards to add to her collection.

She began the year with her largest solo exhibition up to date. A large selection of her mixed media artworks, 49 to be exact, and 16 of her sculptures were on display at the beautiful Paul Mellon Arts Center Gallery, in Wallingford, CT. Corina was also invited by curator, Camilla Cook, to showcase her sculpture, SPIKEY, in "Fresh Pics", an exhibition of contemporary art at the Ridgefield Guild of Artists.

In March, Corina was invited, as guest artist, to exhibit her sculptures and mixed media artworks at GalleryOne at the Clay House in Old Saybrook, CT. Also, while Corina desired to donate her sculpture, AWARENESSS, for the research on Dense Breast Tissue, she was interviewed by TV News Anchor, Ann Nyberg, for her blog, Annie Mame.com

May was very exciting for Corina, her sculpture, RHINO, was juried by Jeffrey Mueller (Gallery Director at Silvermine Guild Arts Center) into the "Small Works" Show at the Mamaroneck Artsits Guild in New York. In addition, two of her sculptures were juried by the nationally recognized artist and educator, Alyssa Monks, into the "Connecticut Women Artists' Juried Exhibition" at the John Slade Ely House, Center for Contemporary Art in New Haven, CT, and both of her sculptures received awards; a Third Place Prize Award for GOLDEN PIG and the People's Choice Award for HUMAN RIGHTS. As well as an excellent review by the juror. To top it off, two of Corina's newest textured paintings, UNSETTLED WATERS and GENTLE FLOW, were selected amongst Best in Painting at "The Healing Power of Art: Positive Art That Uplift The Spirit," an online juried exhibition presented by the Manhattan Arts International. It was juried by Joanie San Chirico (signature Artist Member of the Noyes Museum of Art, Oceanville, NJ,) and Renée Phillips (Founder and Director of Manhattan Arts International and member of the International Association of Art Critics.)

During June, four of Corina's artworks, two of her sculptures and two of her mixed media paintings, were selected by Bina Sarkar Ellias (founder and editor of International Gallerie Magazine) for "Transitions", a virtual exhibition of visual, literary, and performing arts; presented by The Pen & Brush Inc, NYC. Besides, two of Corina's sculptures were juried by Julia Pavone (Director/Curator of the Alexey von Schlippe Gallery of Art at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point Campus since 1992) into the "18th Annual Juried exhibition of the Society of Connecticut Sculptors," at the Alexey Von Schlippe Gallery in Groton, CT

Sponsored by the Downtown Milford Business Association, Corina was invited, along with other artists, to create an artwork on a recycled door. In the summer, completed works were displayed at the sponsoring businesses throughout downtown Milford, and in September the "doors" were auctioned off and a percentage of the sales was donated to this year's local charity, the Milford Fine Arts Council. Additionally, two of Corina's sculptures were juried into "Latin Views, the 5th Biennial," presented the Latin Network for the Visual Arts, at the Alexey Von Schlippe Gallery in Groton, CT. In this exhibition, she had the opportunity to meet artists from many nations where the romance languages are spoken.

In October, Corina participated in the Sixth Annual Water Show, "All About Water VI," presented by the Tracy Art Center at GalleryOne at the Clay House, in Old Saybrook, CT, where she received the Second Place Award for her encaustic mixed media painting, KEEP ON SWIMMING.

Once again, she took part on the Annual New Haven's City-Wide Open Studios, from Erector Square, as well as in the Autumn Arts Trail sponsored by the Arts Center of Killingworth, at the Clinton Landing. During this last event, Corina was interviewed and you can watch it HERE

And last but not least, Corina was invited to showcase her artworks in "Winter Lights," presented by Expressiones Cultural Center in New London, CT, since last November. Tomorrow, Saturday, January 8th, will be the last day to view this exhibition.

In 2010, Corina donated 3 of her paintings, and specially made other 3, to help non-profit organizations in their fundraisers.

She's been also donating 50% of the sales of the pocket mirrors with the printed image of her sculpture, "Awareness", to the Downey Sisters' Fund FOR BRCA MUTATION AWARENESS AND EDUCATION. This fund was established by Phebe and Frederick Downey, to honor their daughters: Ann Downey Little · Margaret Downey Hardy · Katherine Downey Berges · Martha Downey Lemp; and it's used to educate the public and the medical community about the genetic risk of breast and ovarian cancer. If you think art is best created and enjoyed in solitude, the Arts Center of Killingworth's (ACK) sixth annual Autumn Art Trail is going to prove you wrong. The two-day event introduces artists and their audience to one another through a combination of open studio events and an outdoor arts festival.
On Saturday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 10, 12 artists and crafters will open their private studios to the public. A $10 pass grants weekend-long access to the studios, which are located within a scenic drive from one another in Clinton, Durham, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, and Madison. The accompanying, free Outdoor Arts Festival at Clinton Landing features even more artists and crafters, with more than 30 creative Connecticut residents scheduled to participate across both days.

ACK Artistic Director Barbara Nair sees the event's two pieces as working together to promote the non-profit organization's goal of encouraging arts appreciation among all ages.

The Open Studios allow people to "understand firsthand what inspires some of the shoreline's most prominent representational and modern painters, muralists, potters, illustrators, calligraphers, and fashion designers," says Nair. Meanwhile, the Outdoor Arts Festival will complement the focus on "the artistic process for each art form through discussions with the visiting public and demonstrations...Each afternoon there will be live music presented by Face Arts Music in Deep River...A jeweler is going to do activities with the kids...Well-known watercolorist Robert Noreika will do one of his lively painting demonstrations on Sunday at the festival at 12:30," to name a few highlights.

Nair recommends that people begin their Autumn Art Trail journey at the Clinton Landing festival, at which they'll find trail maps, passes for purchase, and even "insider information."

"Come to the Arts Center at Killingworth booth and speak to us," offers Nair. "We know the artists and have visited every studio. If somebody has something they're really interested in or has limited time, we can help them plan their route accordingly."

But be advised: Arts lovers will want to allot plenty of time to the outdoor festival, as well as the trail. Twenty-two artists will share their newest and best works (all for purchase) on both Saturday and Sunday at Clinton Landing from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Virtually every artistic medium is covered by an impressive group that includes painters Dianne Gorrick, Gloria Nilsson, Jacqueline White, Robert Noreika, Sherrie Parenteau, Julianna Cameron, David Choate, and Bill Hosking; mixed media artist Elizabeth Billingsley; sculptor Corina S. Alvarezdelugo; jewelry designers Courtney Bussman, Jessica Dickens, and Dawn Lombard; Uruguayan wooden art and decorative home object designer Pietro Sagnulo; glass artists John Lindsay and Rhoda Pierce; fabric artists Patti Biller, Mary Lachman, Robin McCahill, and Helen Peterle; traditional Japanese hair ornament artist Laurene Gobrogge; and high-end knitting designer Kimberly Conner.

For a closer look at what ACK offers its students, be sure to check out the Children's Art Tent. This new addition to the festival will showcase works by artists aged 6 to 11 who participate in the center's Children's Saturday Morning Art Program.

When you're ready to embark on the trail, the opportunities ahead of you are endless. At the first, most logical destination-that of Karen Green Recor's Clinton working studio-you'll find "vibrant, colorful canvases." A quick jaunt to Essex will reveal abstract expressionist painter and printer Robert DeBartolo and his working printing presses. In Ivoryton, there's Hayne Bayless's Sideways Studios, situated over the Falls River; painter and calligrapher Judith Barbour Osborne; and watercolorist and acrylic painter Jill Vaughn, for whom the gardens surrounding her studio are often the source of inspiration. On the Haddam portion of the trail, porcelain works by John Hull await. In Durham, trail-goers will discover fine art painter Terry Oakes Bourret and The Hobbit illustrator David T. Wenzel. Killingworth boasts the studio of award-winning realist painter Cora Ogden as well as Off the Wall Murals, painter Randy Davis's studio. You won't want to miss couture fashion designer Astrid Niemelaeinen's Killingworth studio, either-or your chance to try on some of her latest designs. And, in Madison, illustrator and Master Connecticut Teaching Artist Sanna Stanley will share the prints, etchings, and book designs that are inspired by her childhood in Africa.

Nair says the quality of work featured in this year's event "is really exceptional across the board," something she's particularly proud of given that the trail is not juried.

"The process of who ends up at the festival or opens up their studios is almost self-selecting in a magical way," she says, adding that the event has become an important opportunity for emerging artists who might not have enough experience to gain entry into a juried exhibit.
It's also an invaluable opportunity for people to gain a deeper appreciation for the artistic process.

Visiting the studios is not like "walking into a gallery or a museum," says Nair. "It's like walking into a person's private [space]...Because the artists are so comfortable in their own space, they can really share what they do; it's really a peek into their process...People are going to see paint brushes and paint, presses, pottery extruders and clay-the actual instruments that artists are working with in their studio when nobody's around...It's about how this artist thinks and what inspires them...It's very important for people to know about-that there is a process here and it's not really that mysterious."

And just in case you're not sold on the Autumn Arts Trail as an affordable, educational way to spend the first part of Columbus Day weekend, Nair has one more enticement: fall foliage.

"The trails you take to get to the studios are going to take you through some beautiful, colorful areas."

The Arts Center at Killingworth presents the sixth annual Autumn Arts Trail on Saturday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 10. Participating studios, which are accessible for a $10 all-weekend pass (free for children aged 12 and younger), will be open both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The accompanying, free Outdoor Arts Festival is at Clinton Landing, also on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is invited to a free opening reception for the weekend-long event on Friday, Oct. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Rose Room of Clinton's Andrews Memorial Town Hall. Passes will also be sold at the Outdoor Arts Festival.

2 Awards on Mother's Day! Can't complain!

Last Sunday, on Mother's Day, was the opening reception of the 81st Annual Connecticut Women Artists Open Juried Exhibition. The Juror of Selection and Awards was Alyssa Monks, nationally recognized artist and educator. So it was a real honor to not only have two of my sculptures selected for the show, but also wining the Third Place Prize Award for my sculpture "Golden Pig."

"Awareness" for a cause!! Update...

Following up in my search for someone to give my sculpture "Awareness" to, I have met some very interesting people, who have given me lots of useful information. I was also interviewed by Ann Nyberg for her lovely blog, and even feature at the Celebrate the Healing Power of Art blog... So I have to thank you all of you who have shown interest in what I'm trying to do and to those of you who have given me names of people working on Dense Breast Tissue. I really appreciate all of your efforts, thus I want to give you all a heads up on how this is coming along.... I'm currently looking into each one of the recommendations I have received, and hopefully soon, I will have someone to donate my artwork to. But, in the meantime...

I'm donating 50% of the sales of my pocket mirrors with the printed image of "Awareness" to the Downey Sisters' Fund FOR BRCA MUTATION AWARENESS AND EDUCATION established by Phebe and Frederick Downey, to honor their daughters: Ann Downey Little • Margaret Downey Hardy • Katherine Downey Berges • Martha Downey Lemp

The fund will be used to educate the public and the medical community about the genetic risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

Here is their story: << Each of our four daughters was determined to have a BRCA1 gene mutation in the summer of 2009. This was after one of their paternal second cousins was diagnosed with breast cancer, and tested positive for a specific BRCA1 mutation which runs in families of Irish/English descent. The hereditary factor became obvious enough to merit active attention.

Fred was tested first and found to have the mutation; our daughters then moved quickly, and unfortunately, each of the four also tested positive. This confirmed some knowledge that had been denied us: hereditary cancers can and do come through the male line. All four of our daughters are in various stages of research, prophylactic surgeries, and treatment. Shockingly, Ann is now battling early stage breast cancer and Martha, early stage ovarian cancer. In each case, awareness of the BRCA1 mutation led to earlier diagnosis than would have occurred otherwise. Both Kate and Meg are in the process of undergoing prophylactic surgeries, and we hope and pray that no further cancers are discovered.

The sadness, the shock, and the diagnoses prompted us to act. We chose FORCE as our avenue because its mission included "to raise awareness of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer" and "to promote research specific to hereditary cancer". This fund will be targeted towards education of both the public and the medical community, so that through it, we might be able to lessen procedures, ease suffering, and best of all, save lives.>>

Making wings for my sculpture, the firefly!

This is a sculpture that I've been working on for a while now, probably for over a year, since the body had to be build twice, and so on... You see, I wanted to make it out of porcelain, very thin, so if I put a light inside it would show through, but my first attempt came out too thick.

As you probably already know, my sculptures are all round, so to make this shape using just a very thin layer of clay is definitely a challenge. So I did a second one, much thinner, but this time I was not taking any chances, and made little tiny holes just in case I want to put lights inside!! I feel that if I go thinner with the clay it would just be too fragile for transportation.

The head and the pair of wings I made out of regular stoneware and applied an oxide on them. Oh, wait! The winds I made them twice, as well. The thing is that my first pair of wings were laid flat in the kiln so they flattened. The second pair came out just perfect... but I think they are too fragile for transportation. Yes, I have to always think about transportation when I make my sculptures, otherwise they won't make it to their destinations.

Therefore, after giving it a lot of thought I came up with the idea of making them out of copper. It's the perfect color and it would add some light to my firefly, don't you think?

I started by tracing my wings into the copper, using my stoneware wings as pattern.

Then, I cut the copper sheet... oh, how I wish I would have worn globes! ...and filed the borders all around, to get rid of sharp edges.

Ready for some action?

It's time to apply heat to my new copper wings in order to shape them. I've never worked with a torch before, but I take my Mixed Media title very seriously, so here it goes!!!

...and my wings are done!

When I first started blogging I had the pleasure to meet a wonderful artist and an amazing human being, Grace Lee Korbel. She was the first cyber friend I made through blogging and she was always encouraging me through her comments to my posts.

Well, I just found out Grace Lee had passed away last year... I knew her health was not great, though every time she felt well she went back to creating wonderful art. 5. I am currently working on getting better with the social media.

art, dense breast tissue and breast cancer

My dear readers, I've made a sculpture with the idea not only to raise awareness about breast cancer - women cancer - but also to give it away, to donate it to a foundation that researches for a cure to breast cancer or women cancer.

So, after having it shown in several venues around Connecticut and in NYC, and viewed internationally through web-based galleries, it's time for me to part from it, and for this I NEED YOUR HELP.

I've tried to find the right foundation but there are so many out there that it's hard to choose from... I do know, however, that many, many women, like me, have dense breast tissue which makes it harder for mammograms to detect abnormalities in the breast. You see, dense areas in the breast show up as white in the mammograms, as well as tumors that also show up as white. To make it even worse for us, in a recent study they have found that the cells that make up dense breast tissue may be a more fertile ground for cancer cells to grow in. The studies even suggested that the cancer cells found in women with dense breast tissue tend to be more aggressive that in women with normal breast tissue.

Therefore, since women with dense breast tissue seem to be more likely to get breast cancer and it's harder to be detected early, I would like to donate my sculpture AWARENESS to a foundation researching for a better way to diagnose and prevent Breast Cancer in women with Dense Breast Tissue. So, if you know of a foundation that would benefit on using my work as a fundraiser for their research efforts, as well as to serve as a reminder that we all women need to be aware of the risks and that we need to take prevention into our hands, please let me know. I would really appreciate it.

V is for...Happy Valentine's Day!

I made this little mixed media collage in the name of LOVE...hence it's name, AMORE!

Once again, I looked into my bag of treasures and found these very old pieces of photographs that depicted red roses on them. They were scraps from a photo class I took while in college; just bad prints that my friend didn't want and she was so nice as to let me keep them. So, this roses where just right as focal point for this piece.

I glued the ripped photographs into a piece of watercolor paper measuring 8.5"h x 10.5"w. I added pieces of hand-made paper and a ripped piece from a pastel drawing. I also added a few pieces of paper here and there from different sources, to add a complementary color and texture. To finish my piece I wrote the word AMORE on silk paper, using India ink in a golden yellow and in red. Then, I ripped the borders by hand and glued the words down around my piece, in a way that you can't read the whole word at once.... Like love, it needs a little effort from both sides to be complete! Enjoy!

V is for Victory!

I had to house-sit for friends the other day. They needed someone to be there to receive some furniture they had bought and I really wanted to work on my art. So, I went there armed with my bag of treasures (it's a bag I have been filling up with things I find with "possibilities"...) and two pieces of wood, measuring 20" x 8" each.

When I got there, to my friends' house, I extended all my "treasures" on their kitchen table and started assembling two collages with the scraps I was finding in my bag. One of them I really liked, so I began gluing the pieces together.

I started by layering a piece of a material I found when workers were taking down the siding in my house. It's like thin brown paper in the back and has a very fine layer of something that looks like aluminum paper, and it probably is! So, as you can imagine it has a vintage feeling to it, besides the texture that it adds to my work...Loved it!

I also found in my bag a tag with four numbers that looked like the ones runners use at marathons... so there was my theme for this piece!

I had ripped pieces from a pastel drawing that I placed here and there to add some needed color. I then drew, with graphite, hands raised up as celebrating the victory of my runner and then glued over a transferred image of hands to add more dimension. Stamped irregular lines here and there with a green mixture of acrylic paint...and the furniture arrived, it was now time to get back home...

NOTE: When making a collage, it's very important to put in layers of materials as you work your way around your piece, this way you'll add depth to your work. It will give it dimension, to an otherwise flat surface.

At home, I felt it still needed something else... so I printed on vellum the outlined image of a runner, and glued it down...VOILA! my piece is done! here is the finished result... Enjoy!

All this time I've been telling you about my solo exhibition at the Paul Mellon Arts Center and then I got so tied up that I haven't been able to tell you about it until today. So here is the heads up!

I started setting up on January 6th. As you know, I brought 49 mixed media paintings and 16 sculptures all together. My husband, our kids and their friends help me transporting all my artworks to the gallery. We needed three cars to do that. They all helped downloading my artworks at the gallery and then they left, all but my husband. After unpacking, we laid down all my paintings on the floor, against the walls, and then my husband had to leave to work So, I was left alone with a hammer, some nails, a tape measure, a pencil, a level, and my artworks. It was scary at first, I didn't know how to start or where to start.

So, I armed myself with courage and started choosing which works would go where, taking into consideration the placement of the sculptures in between my paintings. This was my first time putting up a show this big all by my self.

It took me two days to hang the show around the gallery walls...

...and the long 92' long rounded wall at the Theater lobby.

....on the third day I took my time to carefully assemble "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy", my stoneware and wood sculpture.

This piece is very fragile and the gallery decided for me to place it on top of another pedestal so people won't bump into it, hence it looks as it's sitting in a throne!!

3 days to my artist reception...

My solo art exhibition at The Paul Mellon Arts Center is up and running.

Looking back, I can't believe I managed to make so many paintings in such a small amount of time...talking about pressure... I can really work under pressure!! When the executive director of the Paul Mellon Arts Center, Susan Clark, visited my studio, mid October, 2009, and proposed this exhibition with my work by January of 2010, I was a little worried. I knew I had enough sculptures for the exhibit but not that many paintings. Susan Clark even said to me that if I didn't have enough paintings to put on the walls, we could concentrate in having my work only in the Gallery space. But if you know me, I love a challenge so, I wanted my work all through out the Lobby of the theater as well. Yes!, an extra 92 feet long wall to fill...

You see, the Paul Mellon Arts Center consists of two buildings with a courtyard in the center. Both buildings have a wall of glass towards the courtyard, so you can see from the inside of one building through the other one across. Just beautiful, to be able to see the walls in both spaces filled with art. Well... one of the buildings holds the Gallery, the box office, classrooms... and the other one holds the theater and such...

I knew many people come to the theater from all over to see a play, listen to orchestras, etc, so it was very important for me to have my work in both spaces. So, in a month and a half I created 30 mixed media artworks for the show, even the one I used for the invitations:

old baby pictures and encaustic!

My parents are having their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday and I wanted to create something special to give them on that day. So I went on digging through some old pictures I have in a box. As it turned out, I not only found what I needed to create something for them but other pictures as well. This pictures I used to create 4 more artworks. But today I'm going to show you three of them... it's kind of a series. People can buy them by themselves or as a group. Here they are:

They are made using encaustic on 6" x 6" wood panels. I have transferred the images into the encaustic and then I fussed it to it with the heat gun. I then used the scribing technique to imprint lines through them. Enjoy!

I spent two nights in a row creating two books that I want to display as my portfolio during my upcoming Solo Exhibit in January. Two nights where I only slept 1 hour the first night and 3 hours on the second night, but the good thing is that I managed to make them both. The first one is a compilation of most of my sculptures arranged in two chapters (From the Animal World - From the World Around Us), plus a first chapter with information about the process involved when I create each one of my pieces. The second book is about my mixed media work, compiled as a catalog form.

I'm very excited that I just can't wait to see the printed version of them!!! I'll let you know as soon as I get them...

and... yesterday morning, after no much sleep, I was still in my creative mode so I couldn't stop my self not even to have breakfast. So I added a new mixed media work to my collection. Here it is:

After you saw the picture of me working on the third painting the other day, you won't believe how it ended up.

As it turned out, the paper I used for this piece is not really recommended... I couldn't even pull it without getting it ripped as I was gluing it down, it shrank, and it broke. When dried some pieces got unglued and the paper became hard as cardboard. So I had to tame it down with some water and more glue. But when it was all set and done, I didn't like the way it looked and to top it off I tried to transfer some words into the surface and as I was varnishing the piece, the ink spread...what a mess!

Now, imagine the work trying to rip the paper off after it had a coat of varnish on top... so I re wet it to loose it up and only a few pieces came off. So I kept on trying until I started liking what I was seeing. Then, I had the idea to paint with acrylics to make it look as something old, like copper would do. Some greens here and there and VOILA! The painting is done! Enjoy!

Now, if it only had a name... My friend suggested to name it DYSFUNCTIONAL, as a follow up from my Family Tree Series. What do you think? I'd like to hear from you....

2 new today and the begining of a third

This morning I started working on a 20' x 20' canvas. I wanted to make one more painting related to my Family Tree series but not part of the series. It's just that I loved working on that technique so much that I keep going back to it. But this is my last one in this style... at least for now.

I started as always, tracing, cutting and pasting...

My studio is a mess! sorry about that, but my January solo is keeping me very busy... no time for cleaning up and organizing for now!!

In the afternoon, in between driving kids around and doing laundry at the local Laundromat, I managed to finish this two mixed media paintings with encaustic:

I started working on this painting last week, but couldn't go on because I ran out of paint, Crimson Red to be exact; and when I finally bought the paint it was in the middle of Thanksgiving... and you know how that is... the cooking, the cleaning, the guests, more cooking and more cleaning!!!! OF COURSE! there is also the laughter, the joy to be surrounded by family and dear friends, being thankful to God for all He has given us. I can't complaint!
So tonight, I went back to work and finished this mixed media painting on canvas that measures 36" x 36"... or at least I think I finished it!! I might change my mind tomorrow, when I have better light...

recent works using copper

I've been working on these two 12" x 12" paintings, they are done on copper sheets mounted on wood composite. I painted on them using vinegar, sea salt, and acrylic paint and applying over transferred images. Here are the results so far...

Earthbound I and II

This is the first time I work on copper sheets and didn't really know how to approach it. So, I use materials that I thought would react with the copper and the results are great. I just love the blue-green tones. Any other suggestions?

working on a series...

I've never worked on a series before, but I loved so much the technique I used to create my piece Family Tree, that I made it into a series of 6 paintings, 12" x 12" each. Three of the canvases are 1 1/2 deep and the other three are 2 1/2 deep. So, when I hang them at my exhibition in January there will be a nice visual effect. Here the pictures,

Preparing for my solo next January 2010

I have been invited to exhibit my work at the Paul Mellon Arts Center Gallery, in Wallingford, CT, next January 2010. I have enough sculptures to bring but I need more of my paintings to go along. It is a large space and they have many walls to fill. So I've decided to try to paint non-stop everyday until the Holiday break in December.

Last week, I spent it preparing a few canvases to work on. Applying texture to the background, then I applied Gesso on them. So now they are ready to start working on them. So, today I went right to work. I already had the idea of what I wanted to paint on one of the canvases. I had taken a picture with my cellphone a while ago and even do the picture was fussy I just loved the effect, so I saved it. The picture was my inspiration and here is the end result, enjoy!

Yes! My painting "LIBERTAD" is done! Here is the end result:

Once again, another political piece, I know, but is all part of my story... I started this one after witnessing the electoral process in my home country, Venezuela.

Unfortunately, there is not such a democracy in Venezuela as one might think, and that is something very sad to experience. But my piece is about HOPE, as "a house divided against itself cannot stand," and is only in unity that we will achieve our freedom.

Note: "unity" is represented in my painting by the Statue of Liberty.

I took a piece of canvas and started making wavy lines using the same three colors, just mixed up different in order to get a variety of gradations. I wanted to get the effect that some of the wavy lines were on the front plane and others were receding. To my surprise, one of the lines looked to me as the silhouette of a person. So I added a piece of hand-made paper, the same color as the one I was using with some red paint added to it, made to look as the person had a broken heart.

Still I wasn't happy with it. It needed something else to make the lines recede more, it needed more depth. It was then I decided to use encaustic. So I glued the canvas to a piece of wood using encaustic and then added some more encaustic to the top of the canvas. Playing with the amount of wax I was adding here and there until I got the desired effect.

To finish the piece I transferred into the encaustic the words: "How can you mend a broken he..."

Here the result:

This piece was finished right before Open Studios at the beginning of October. I hung it up the first day at Open Studios and somebody came in and felt in love with it. He came later in the day and decided he wanted to buy it but he needed to get his check book from his car. I thought he was kidding! But not, five minutes before closing he came back and paid for the painting and left me HEARTBROKEN!!

For those of you who are artists you know how our works are like babies and we like to keep them for while before seeing them part away, so you can understand how I felt to see this piece leave so soon. But I'm sure it found a nice home where it's going to be cherished!

To sign or not to sign your two-dimensional work, where and how?

Renee Phillips, "The Artrepreneur Coach" (Author, Artist, and Director: Manhattan Arts International, and The Healing Power of ART,) just opened up a discussion on the LinkedIn group of the Manhattan Arts International about this theme.

I find her questions very interesting as I'm sure many of you artists out there, like me, have thought about them many times. In this way, I want to share my response to her questions with you, so you know a little more about me.

Renee Phillips asks:
"Artists who create original two-dimensional art, where do you sign your art work, on the front, back or both? What is the general consensus? Assuming there is a current trend regarding signature placement, do you follow it? Is it important to you to have your name visible on your art work? Do you place the date of your piece on the back of the painting? What material or medium do you use to sign?

My response:
"I'm always debating on what suits best with the piece I'm working on. But as a general rule, I like to have my signature visible and no date. I sign the back as well, just as an added touch in respect for the buyer. So they know they are buying an original piece of art.

In any case, if I feel the signature is going to be in the way, especially when working on mixed media, I try using a color that will blend with the rest so it does not take away from the message I want to convey. Now, when I’ve done landscapes and other realistic themes I would sign in a diagonal, somewhere in the lower portion of the canvas, at the right or left side (depending on where it fits best) and very clear using a dark color (blue, gray, and brown, depending on the piece, with a fine brush). This practice, which I don't regret, caused me an entry to an exhibition. The juror just couldn't get over my signature, as I was told. He would’ve wanted me to sign discretely at the bottom of the canvas instead.

My thought is that very often your signature is what sets you apart from the rest of the artists out there, is what identifies you from the rests; so why not make it bold, like Picasso did? In this way, one becomes freer to experiment with new ideas and techniques, to try different mediums and approaches, and then your creativity will have no limits. It is your signature what, at the end, will tie everything together as your body of work…your legacy.

On the other hand, regarding the material or medium I use to sign with; I use oils if the painting was done in oils, acrylics if it was done in acrylics and archival ink markers when working on paper. But sometimes I use other mediums as well, what’s important for me is to be consistent with how I sign."

I received a phone call today to let me know my sculpture Rhino has been awarded the Joseph Gaultieri Cash Award at The 53rd Regional art exhibition at the Mystic Arts Center. I'm so excited about it and I wanted to share it with you!

This exhibition was juried by artist Carolina Pedraza, Head of Youth & Family Programs at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, a national leader in the exhibition of challenging contemporary art and the emergence of mid-career artists.

My First ACEO!

“Spring Flowers”, is the first original ACEO I have ever made. How fun it is to paint in that small scale. I really enjoyed doing it!

ACEO stands for: Art Cards, Editions, and Originals, with the standard size measure of 2.5 x 3.5 inches (64 x 89 mm). You can collect them, trade them, wear them, display them... What a great idea, don't you think?

I've painted this mini, one of a kind, artwork with acrylics on Strathmore heavyweight textured paper. It is my contemporary response to a base filled with spring flowers. Here is a picture of it:

About "Celebrate HerStory 2009"

As promise, here is my update on this exhibition...

Jurors, Janice Sands (Executive Director of Pen and Brush Galleries in New York City) and Renée Phillips (Founder and Director of Manhattan Arts International and member of the International Association of Art Critics) selected the three sculptures I submitted for the show as Best in Sculpture, among with other six from six other artists. As you can see, there were only 9 sculptures chosen from which three are mine, so I'm very pleased about it!!! And... to top it up, I received a second place cash award for my sculpture work. Here is what juror Renee Phillips said about it on her statement: "I selected Corina S. Alvarezdelugo for the $75 Cash Award because her sculpture addresses HerStory with bold simplicity and versatility."

On Renee Phillip's letter to me it reads: "Congratulations! Your entries were outstanding and both Janice Sands and I were in agreement about selecting your work for the "Celebrate HerStory" online group exhibition on the Manhattan Arts website... After putting up the online exhibition I (Renee Phillips) took time visiting each wiener's website and upon seeing the rest of your work, it was clear you should receive one of the Manhattan Arts International special awards..."

From Sweet to Bitter: 2 projects, 2 completely different themes, 2 extremes

I'm currently working on two projects at the same time. One about bees and honey; and the other one about how time pass by for women in jail... From sweet to bitter...oh my! Let's see what comes out from this!!!Project 1: Beeline: it's all about the bee

The guidelines for this exhibition is that one has to incorporate encaustic (or mixed-media encaustic) to paintings, sculptures and works on paper that relate directly or indirectly to the theme of bees, abejas, abeilles.
